Fun family activities on the Menai Strait

Menai Strait from www.visitanglesey.co.uk

The Menai Strait is the narrow stretch of water that separates Anglesey from the mainland. It measures 25km in length and is famous for being the location of important landmarks such as Caernarfon and Beaumaris Castle, Thomas Telford’s historic Menai suspension bridge, completed in 1826. It’s also known as being dangerous with raging torrents and whirlpools - the Swellies being the most notorious.

That being said, the Strait is also the setting for lots of fun activities and things to do on your next day out. We’ve put together a list of some suggestions...

Enjoy a boat ride tour

The best way to see the Menai Striat is via the Strait itself. This will give you a fresh perspective on the locations that have become familiar to you, as well as introduce you to new ones.

There’s an array of local companies that offer boat trips, as well as a good selection of specialist tours - from adrenaline-fuelled speed boats to ones dedicated to nature and wildlife, such as seal-spotting and puffin island.

Boat tours can be taken from a number of spots including Menai, Caernarfon and Beaumaris. Your best bet to find the right trip for you and your family is to do a quick google search and all the main operators are easily found from there.

eFoil adventures

Ok, this is a bit of a curve ball suggestion, but it looks like incredible fun. eFoils are like motorised surfboards or wakeboards that uses a hydrofoil wing to lift the board out of the water and cruise along. It sounds more complicated than it is – see the image to get a better idea of what we mean.

In terms of skill, the local operator FoilRide say you can learn how to ride an eFoil in a matter of hours and those with “a token amount of balance and coordination” and riders of all abilities can enjoy the sensation of flying on water.

Cost and age could be a barrier with the introductory 3 hour “First flight” course costing £200pp and 16 years old being the minimum age. However, for a special treat or occasion it would be an amazing day out.

Self-powered exploration of the Menai Strait

This includes options such as paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing. For a family, these are great options as they keep younger kids engaged physically and they can be more social as it’s often easier to talk to each other without the sound of motors. Again, there are lots of options for these kinds of activities with companies operating out of Caernarfon and Menai – self-research via Google is your best bet.
